Last night at dinner, the kids began to talk about “Romeo and Juliet.” My daughter is reading the play for her Honors English class.
She mentioned that the story took place over the course of three days (a fact that I did not remember from my days as an English major in college. Then again, I couldn’t remember where I parked my car when I left Bible study last night, so that’s not saying much! :)).
“There is no way anyone could fall in love with someone in three days!” she said emphatically.
“I knew I loved your father as soon as I saw him,” I told her.
Both of my kids looked at me like I was crazy.
“That’s impossible,” Josh said and Julia nodded in agreement.
Not impossible. True.
Granted, no one can love someone deeply upon first meeting them. That takes time and commitment.
However, I was 25 years old when I met Doug. I had been to college and out in the working world for a couple of years so I was no longer a kid. I had dated but there was no one that I was even remotely interested in spending the rest of my life with.
I recently heard someone talking about meeting her husband. She said, “The instant I looked into his eyes, it was like coming home.”
That is exactly how I felt the first time I met Doug. It may sound sappy and unbelievable but it is the truth.
Those blue eyes contained kindness, intelligence, humor, a twinkle of playfulness, and wisdom that endlessly intrigued me.
By the end of our first date, I knew I would marry him.
I just knew in a way I could not explain that I would love this man for the rest of my days.
And I have.
What about you? Do you believe in love at first sight? Have you experienced it?
I do and I have 🙂 Aren’t we blessed? TY Jesus!!!!!!!
That’s me… Claudia 🙂
Yes, Claudia, we certainly are blessed! Glad to hear you have a similar story!
I only “believe” in it because of testimonies from people like you who I know aren’t crazy. 😉 I have not experienced it. I wonder how many stories there are out there of “love at first sight” with not such a wonderful ending to them.
So many people would tell me that “you just know” when you meet the right person and I never got it…until I did. 🙂
I believe love at first sight can and does happen although it didn’t happen with me. We dated for about two and a half months when Don was to take me down to meet a bus for our senior trip to D.C. He was late, so I thought, and my brother took me down to school. Shortly after we left home, Don arrived and mom told him we left. She said he tore out of the driveway. I was on the bus, looked out the window and saw him standing there. I knew that night that I loved him and would forever. Miss my Don.
Elaine, I am so glad you answered this because I wondered about you and Don! (I am willing to bet that it was love at first sight for him! :). Yours was (is) such a great love story!
He really was the LOVE OF MY LIFE. He was handsome, funny, loyal, kind, faithful to me and our Lord. He was a wonderful dad who taught our boys by his example on how to be the men they are today. I can see so much of Don in both of them. He would have been 80 this coming Monday and we would have celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary Sept. 1. Life has gone on for me but I feel him near me every day and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of him many times.
Elaine, those are beautiful words that describe a beautiful man. We were all better people for knowing Don.
Thanks for sharing your Love at First Sight story, Susan…so sweet! Ours was more like love at second (or third) sight, haha, but equally blessed by God in the end! 🙂
